Time apart splits Johns, Imbruglia

SYDNEY – Diverging music careers have forced Natalie Imbruglia and Silverchair’s Daniel Johns to divorce. The two Australian favourites have announced an end to their marriage after four years. They began dating in 1999 and married on New Year’s Eve in 2003. But successful careers have kept the two working on opposite sides of the world. For the past few years, Imbruglia has spent much of her time in Europe while Johns has been touring Australia and the US. “This mutual decision has not been taken lightly or quickly,” the pair said in a joint statement. “We have simply grown apart through not being able to spend enough time together.”

Rolls a golden oldie

The oldest Rolls-Royce in the world has been sold for a record $8.13 million at an auction in London. Auction house Bonhams described the 1904 model as “a true motoring icon”.The two-seater was the fourth vehicle to be made at the Rolls-Royce factory in Manchester and had just 10hp (7.46kW). TASMANIAN poppy farmers are keeping their fingers crossed that poor weather doesn’t damage this year’s $50 million crop.

Promises for next year of guaranteed minimum area and prices from GlaxoSmithKline and competitive pricing offers from Tasmanian Alkaloids suggest that the State’s five-year poppy downturn is over. After a dry start to the season, most crops are looking good, but with only a few weeks to go before harvesting, the crop is approaching its most vulnerable as poppy heads start to dry.

Heavy rains or strong winds towards the end of January will reduce the amount of alkaloid in the poppies, reducing the return to farmers.
