Holiday toll 35 after motorcycle crash

MELBOURNE – The national holiday road toll climbed to 35 with the death of a Victorian motorcyclist in a collision yesterday.Victoria’s toll rose to 13 when the 36-year-old male motorcyclist died following the crash in the state’s east.The collision on the Mt Baw Baw Tourist Rd, near Noojee, occurred about 9.30am when the motorcyclist lost control and veered into the path of an oncoming sedan, Victoria Police said.The Berwick man died at the scene.Victoria has the worst road toll nationally, with 13 fatalities since the Christmas holiday period began on December 21.Western Australia has the next highest toll with seven road deaths, followed by NSW with six and Queensland with four.There have been two deaths in south Australia and one each in the Northern Territory, the ACT and Tasmania.NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione said that while every death was a tragedy, NSW drivers should be congratulated for the state’s lower-than-expected road toll this holiday season.
