Kenyan death toll rises in riots

NAIROBI – Police battled protesters in Nairobi’s blazing slums yesterday as President Mwai Kibaki began a second term after a disputed vote that has convulsed Kenya and led to a rising death toll.Seven people were reported killed in a night of violence in Kisumu, western Kenya, a heartland of opposition support.That would bring the death toll across Kenya since Thursday’s vote to about 20.Trying to defuse one of the most volatile moments in Kenya since the 1963 independence from Britain, the Government kept a ban on live TV broadcasts, imposed a curfew in Kisumu and other hot spots and flood the streets with troops.Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade warned Australians to reconsider their need to travel to Kenya.
