SCAREMONGERING is hindering sensible discussion over a reform to Tasmania’s water supply and quality, says Treasurer Michael Aird.
Mr Aird is calling for a coordinated response to the State’s widespread water and sewerage problems, describing the current model as ineffective. “Water and sewerage as it is currently structured under 29 councils is not working.”
“We need another model.”
Mr Aird said those opposed to reform on the grounds that ratepayers will be forced to pay huge subsidies to other less affluent councils is wrong.
“Figures produced by Burnie City Council recently were ridiculous and this sort of scaremongering is hindering sensible discussion over a reform Tasmania desperately needs.”
