But with Jaques missing, he filled the void nicely by scoring his first century in two years to lead his side to victory on Saturday.

Chasing Sydney University’s sizeable 303 first day total, Hughston put his head down from the start to ensure his team got a good go at the total.

He shared a third wicket partnership of 154 in 141 minutes with Mitch Brown, who made 54.

When Hughston was finally out for 144 off 237 balls in 286 minutes, his side was virtually home.

Luke Dudman (25) and Jamie Brown (30no in his first top-grade match) made sure that the target was achieved without trouble, with the score finishing on 6/304.

Hughston wasn’t the only Sutherland century-maker though the grades and co-incidentally, Sutherland’s second grade recorded an identical total of 6/304 as they chased down Uni’s 8/301 declared.

The highlight was a record fifth-wicket partnership for second grade of 179 between Kurt Brown (123) and captain Joel Burnett (116no).

Third grade also won scoring 6/264 against Uni’s 204 with Ryan Maguire, a new player from the Illawarra region, top scoring with 105no, while Duncan Maddinson, younger brother of state rep Nic, made 64. They shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 113.

The fifth century of the day was scored by another new player in Adam El-Daher, who made 103. Club official Tom Iceton revealed it was the first century scored for Sutherland in fourth grade against Sydney University in the club’s 48-year history.

■ Sutherland enjoyed an exciting three-run win against North Sydney in the Twenty/20 match at North Sydney Oval on Sunday. Openers Stephen Cush (29) and Mitch Brown (38 off 27 balls) tallied a 63-run partnership off 7.4 overs, before four run outs. Daniel Rixon (20 not out) scored 17 runs off the last two overs to take the total to 9-128.

North Sydney openers scored equally as freely, before Jamie Brown dismissed both batsmen in three balls and then Nathan Fitzgerald claimed two wickets in three balls. Accurate bowling by Fitzgerald and Dudman in the final two overs restricted Norths to 12 runs and the match was won by three runs.
