The power of face fuzz to draw attention to male health issues will be tested by a group of TAFE Western students who are organising Mo-Fest at the end of November.
The community event will take place in Victoria Park on Thursday, November 29, and will include highlights such as the moustache growing competition Dubbo’s Next Top Mo and activities for children.
But behind the fun of Movember lies the serious issue of raising awareness in men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and mental health.
Miriam Semenyna is a Certificate IV student in community services work who is part of the project group at TAFE Western organising Mo-Fest.
She said the Western NSW Local Health District in Dubbo asked her student group at TAFE Western Dubbo College Fitzroy campus to focus on the health issue of depression in men for the Movember event.
As part of Mo-Fest free men’s health checks, The Pit Stop will be offered throughout the duration of the event from 4pm until 7pm.
“It is the first year we have done this, we are trying to establish a great event for coming years by doing the groundwork now,” Miss Semenyna said.
“We have been really lucky to have the health services around the local area helping us.”
The students involved in the project have asked businesses around Dubbo how they will take part in Movember.
“We want to encourage businesses in Dubbo to get involved,” Miss Semenyna said.
As part of raising awareness and getting the community involved the students have designed a competition.
“We have a gnome that will be placed around the town in different businesses,” Miss Semenyna said. “If people spot him they will win a prize.”
The first event on the calendar for Movember will be a barbecue outside Bunnings Warehouse to help the students raise funds for Mo-Fest, taking place on Sunday from 9am to 4pm.
