HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson and a group of 15 young players last week retraced the steps of the Australian soldiers who walked the Kokoda Track to take on the advancing Japanese army in 1942.Carrying 20kg sandbags on their shoulders and lugging tree trunks to simulate heavy artillery, the players were given some idea of the ordeal faced by their compatriots – thousands of whom did not return. Trekking began at 6.30am and by 9am the players were drenched in sweat. They would walk until 4pm when they would seek out a creek to soak their clothes which remained unchanged all week.
