More than 1000 people turned out in Perth yesterday for the State memorial service for Sir Charles, who died last month aged 96 surrounded by his close-knit family. Farewelling the Liberal elder statesman were Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith, representing Prime Minister Kevin Rudd; former Prime Ministers John Howard and Malcolm Fraser; WA Premier Alan Carpenter and federal Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson. Sir Charles was a politician for 29 years and Premier of WA from 1974 to 1982.
