A STRONG and effective regional development organisation for Northern Tasmania is essential, KPMG has said in NTD’s performance review. In the report, KMPG said there was a case for regional development and highlighted the number of emerging regional development bodies internationally, which work to provide a pathway of community from a regional level to central governments. It said NTD had undertaken some worthy economic and community strategic initiatives for its shareholders but said it was yet to reach its full potential. Over the past three years the organisation has led the way as the regional tourism authority for Northern Tasmania but there have been less evident outcomes in the area of economic development. It also said NTD’s community development service area needed to reflect an emphasis on facilitating, brokering, advocating and lobbying rather than its current emphasis on service delivery. “Over the period of review there is evidence that the organisation has been prolific in its activity level,” the report said. “This activity shows an organisation predominantly effective in undertaking worthy economic, community and environmental strategic initiatives that provide value for shareholder’s invested dollar.”
