South Australian racing identity Cheree Gask will be the special guest of the Devonport Racing Club this week.
She will bring with her a story of courage and determination after a horrific race fall ended her career as a jockey in 2003. In the fall she lost the lower half of her right leg and it brought the curtain down on her time in the saddle after riding over 101 winners.
Determined to stay in racing after her rehabiliation Cheree became known to racegoers around Australia as the mounting yard presenter on Sky Channel for Adelaide’s metropolitan meetings.
After marrying her fiance Barney Gask in October 2005 Cheree then became a mum and finished with Sky Channel late in 2006.
She was originally contacted by the Devonport Racing Club to be a guest at last year’s Devonport Cup but asked to delay the trip for 12 months because of the pending birth of her son Mitchell.
Cheree will arrive in Devonport on Tuesday and be guest speaker at the club’s cocktail party at the Winning Post restaurant that night and then the following day will provide her expertise at the Cup.
